Aanganwadis are the rural childcare centres in India. There are approximately 14 Lakh such centres across rural Indian where ‘sevikas’ facilitate early childhood learning between 3-6 years of age. This project explores the opportunity of using technology-based pedagogy to enhance engagement and intrinsic motivation in play-based learning activities in young learners. This project has designed and implemented an AR/AI-based learning toolkit comprising interactive books, interactive cards and a user manual. The toolkit has mapped all 68 learning competencies that are measurable through their three levels of learning outcomes, as described in the NEP 2020 and NCF for ECCE.

In the pilot phase, these kits were implemented in 12 aanganwadis across five states during 2023-24 and in an additional 86 aanganwadis across 18 states during 2024-25. Initial results show promising positive outcomes in the use of technology in aanganwadi centres at multiple levels in the ecosystem of early childhood education in rural India.

Currently, the project is focused on further development of interactive learning tools, incorporating ongoing teacher feedback, and providing regular training sessions to strengthen pedagogical integration and maximise the kit’s effectiveness in diverse classroom settings. The initiative continues to prioritise play-based, child-centred learning while ensuring accessibility and relevance across varied Anganwadi contexts.
